Maintaining Your Electrics

Whether commercial, domestic or agricultural, maintaining your electrics is crucial to keep those using them safe and sound. Having periodic electrical inspections helps you to ensure safety and to prevent against deterioration. All electrics should be tested at appropriate intervals to check that everything meets a satisfactory condition. Any periodic inspection will typically follow a series of inspections including checking electrical circuits and equipment for any overloading, finding potential shock hazards, identifying any defective electrical works, and highlighting any lacks in bonding or earthing. Electrics should be tested every 10 years in a home, 5 years in a rented property, 3 years in a caravan, and 1 year in a swimming pool.

All electrical tools used on an agricultural site should be maintained to the same standard as commercial and domestic electrical units. Any tool used outdoors or where there is a lot of earthed metalwork should be operated at a reduced voltage from a safety isolating transformer and be connected via a RCD (Residual Current Device) which is able to cut off power quickly if needed.

What is PAT?

Known as Portable Appliance Testing, PAT enables checks to be undertaken on appliances which are not fixed. This process includes a thorough inspection of any portable electrical appliance to ensure that health and safety regulations are being met. An electrician will first conduct a visual test on wiring and the device to make sure that there are no noticeable signs of damage. If required, a further test will be carried out on the equipment by injecting test signals into the appliance and cable to make sure there is no hidden damage. It is important that PAT is undertaken to keep appliances safe and secure to use.

Once completed, a device will either pass or fail. You should as a minimum receive a report which details a full set of test results, an inventory containing name, type, location and description of each appliance, full list of any failed explanations with a failure reason, and a pass or fail label. The pass or fail label on a device should contain the status of the object, when it was testing, when it’s next test is due, and the signature of the inspector.
